Lessons Learned
With Roots and Butterbee
Session 1: More than One Way to Sling a Flower
8-10 AM
While new growers may seek “the best way” to sell their flowers, there is no one best way. Geography, personality, and growing preferences all contribute to choosing a sales model that works for a flower farmer. This session will dive deep into a comparison of two successful business models with Michelle and Laura Beth.
Session 2: Funding Butterbee, Years 1-5
10-noon
Ten years ago, Laura Beth started Butterbee Farm with $500 in her bank account. Those first five years weren’t easy, but between grants, crowdfunding, part time jobs, and a lot of luck, Butterbee grew into a self-sustaining business. Laura Beth will share how it all came together, including how she created her budgets, what implements and infrastructure she prioritized in the early years, and lessons learned looking back.
Session 3: Breakout Sessions
Noon-2 pm
We’ll split up into two groups for moderated discussion. We all have so much to learn from each other! Submit your questions in advance, and bring more in person.
Laura Beth’s Group: Working with Florists
Michelle’s Group: CSA, Farmer’s Market, and Grocery
Session 4: Roots Tour
2-3:30 pm
Michelle will give an in-depth tour of her 12 acre farm, including high tunnels, barns, woody fields, and annual fields. She’ll discuss how her team produces ten zillion bouquets a season for Wegmans, how she thinks about crop planning each year, and more. Photos are welcome!
