Fall Planting in the Garden

Want to get spring flowers a month earlier? Here’s the secret: plant in fall!

When we plant outdoors in fall, we get taller, bigger, earlier blooms in spring. There are two important keys to success: timing, and choosing the right varieties.

In this online class, Butterbee farmer Laura Beth will share our fall planting methods, tricks, and lessons learned. You’ll be cutting bachelors buttons, larkspur, nigella, bells of ireland, agrostemma, and more come spring! We’ll focus on about fifteen annuals that we love.

This class is geared towards the small-scale gardener, but commercial farmers will find it helpful too. We record all our classes, so no worries if you can’t make it live!

We’ll reveal our fall planting process, from preparing beds to choosing varieties and planting dates. Butterbee is in Zone 7, but we’ll also discuss calibrating planting dates for warmer/cooler zones. We’ll talk yield (how many blooms to expect), deer and rabbit protection, our most favorite varieties, and harvest tips.

You do not need greenhouse or special tools for these fall plants. Any gardener with a sunny area (in ground or outdoor container) can do this technique. In fact, many of these plants can be seeded right into the soil, no transplants necessary.
